February 2015:
The RAMS students are currently working on a debate project. They were asked to come up with a topic that they feel passionately about and truly want to make a change, and are now researching to build their argument. Part of the research involves getting primary feedback and surveying large groups. Picture to the right are group members who are sorting through questionnaires they had passed out to over 150 students to get their opinions on standardized testing. They are learning that when they invest their time into things that truly matter to them it has so much more meaning!

Check out some of the engineering tasks the RAMS students have been taking on during their "Station Time." We have quite a few creators and problem solvers among us!

We are very proud of several of the RAMS Gifted students who had prominent roles in this year's Veterans Day celebration. Charlie Richter had the honorable role of leading the veteran's march through the halls. Emily Wahlenmayer wrote a poem titled A Veteran's Character, and Katie Huntley created artwork to go with it. This poem/artwork was given as a gift to the local American Legion to be displayed for all of our local veterans. These three students, along with the rest of the group who helped decorate and prepare for the celebration, showed great respect and appreciation for all our veterans have done for us!

Also as a part of our Creative Problem Solving unit, students are using photos of wacky failed inventions from the past. They had to generate a list of questions that would need to be answered before they were able to make a good guess as to what the invention was used for. Asking questions is essential to solving problems!

Our field trip to the Behrend Engineering Department was both challenging and fun! Students first learned about all the careers that fall under the Engineering umbrella, and realized how much of the things they use every day were designed by Engineers. They were then given two teamwork challenges. The first was to design and build a candy bag that could hold the required weight. In the second challenge, they were Engineers for NASA and had to design a "robotic" arm that could pick up a cup from 18 inches away. Of course there were a few wrenches thrown into the mix. After the challenges, the students were given a tour of the Engineering facilities at Behrend. We would like to thank Mrs. Ford and the rest of the Behrend Engineering K-12 Outreach Center for hosting such a great day! Enjoy the pictures below! Following the pictures is a video to give a little insight into their NASA challenge...
